A little bit about the new collection...

Designers love to employ beautiful fabrics to combine function and aesthetics in whimsical play. The Sognsvann lamp (Left) follows this creed by evoking a memory the designer had along Norway's Lake Sognsvann. The fabric, what at first glance might appear to be an abstract bleed, is a scene of trees reflected in still water. Passersby provoke the glistening silk to lightly sway, creating an ebb and flow in the depicted waters. The light bulb that hangs behind the silk curtain could be mistaken for the moon as the viewer is slowly hypnotized by the lamp’s layered nuance. The Sognsvann lamp, made of Scandinavian Oakwood inspires the senses with its poetic efficacy and exceeds the boundaries of a fabric’s functional uses. Right (Gold Pendant Lamp)

This year Brunklaus Amsterdam was true to form, creating new textiles and lamps that engage their audience with hidden meaning. For the textile collection, Brunklaus chose to tell a family story, of sorts, by reinventing forgotten family relics, woven and needlepoint craft from 1890 to the present. The textiles, trompe l’oeil collages of old knit work, tell a story of time and endurance. Their profound color combinations attract the eye and create moments that draw the viewer into a history they have yet to learn.

It's the third day of the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2012. New pillows, lamps and more are on display at our booth this year. The Stockholm Furniture Fair breeds big ideas among creative people and plenty of positive energy. Even on the first day, after our stand was painted in a deep-blue green, it looked like we entered a fairy tale. We realized the Brunklaus world in pop-up form!

The colors of the new Sognsvann pendant lamps are bold and sultry against the background walls. Every movement in the air provokes the silk to move slightly, like ripples on the surface of the Norwegian Lake Sognsvann (the source of inspiration for the new lamp).

As architects, press and stylist came from Elle, Bobedre, and the Swedish design magazine Villabladet Sydväst, we had the feeling we were losing them to another world in the soft and alluring glow of the pendant lamps.

It's less than two weeks before this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair, February 7-11th.
Excitement is in the air at our Amsterdam studio as we prepare our new collection for its debut in Sweden.
Nicolette Brunklaus, our C.E.O. and chief designer, was inspired to create much of the work on a trip to Scandinavia, so it seems fitting that inspiration and inspired should meet again to introduce the collection.
Pictured here is a preview of the new Brunklaus textiles featuring uncommonly beautiful combinations of vintage colors, trompe l ‘oeil designs and various modern structures.

Every time I visit a forest I make sure I have my camera with me. As a hunter I explore the woods for the right light and the right colors.
This was taken last sunday.

There is an exhibition on Ruud van Empel in the Groninger Museum right now.

I find him one of the most interesting photographers at the moment

I also visited an opening at the Jewish Historical museum/Joods historisch museum in Amsterdam for the opening of a New York based photographer

Inside design 2011 on IJburg

This years the inside design event will be held on familiar grounds, on Ijburg island in Amsterdam where we have our studio. Inside design is a yearly event organized by the Dutch Elle decoration.
We are happy to be presented on two locations.

We will show new textiles and the new shady tree colors in a group exhibition designed by kamer 465 on the location.

Animated film to be released by the end of October

After a year of preparation I finally started filming a personal dream in which my products come to life.

At this moment my team is busy translating all ideas into a short animated film.

The film impression is designed as a visual rhyming of my collection. I wanted to communicate the personal sphere in which I created my designs. It will take you from one world to another.

The Brunklaus 2- minute film will be released by the end of October.

She is working as an Interior designer but also does product design from furniture to lighting. On her travels around the world she has developed a very interesting portfolio with photography.

Presenting Brunklaus Amsterdam to the Scandinavian world

Dear all,
I just returned from the Stockholm furniture fair, where we presented the Brunklaus collection.
I find this fair one of the most fun in Europe. It is a good size and of very high quality. The Swedish people are relaxed and still enjoy high quality products.
We had an enormous good response to the collection, even though the shady tree lighting has been around since 2002 the new colors matched very well with the deep printed textiles against a white background and floor .

Event in Denmark, Mekavi, Bo Bedre, Brunklaus

Last Wednesday I did an event in Copenhagen, organized by Mekavi and the Danish home magazine Bo Bedre. Mekavi had a beautiful exhibition space prepared when i arrived very white, large and high.

I spoke about my designs to the Bo Bedre readers and it was great that even though the heavy weather conditions a big crowd showed up.

New York and Oslo

One of the things that have been on my agenda for a long time is to visit New York again.

I was there last week to visit friends and colleagues and to just experience the creative energy of this big city.

I was very much inspired by the art bookfair at PS1, all art bookpublishers in one building displayed their book collections. I found a book on Merit Oppenheim and am still in search for a copy of Elsa Schiaparelli.

I visited the Mood fabric store (project runway) in the garment district, what a great place for fabric lovers, left over fabrics from a wide range of fashion designers are just for sale in this shop.

From New york with a one day stop at the studio in Amsterdam I left for Oslo.

In Oslo at Eske: the shop was redesigned by Karina Holmen, Eske has a large range of Brunklaus design

from the house of anne,vintage forest, portrait pillows to the new colors of the shady tree lamp and the house of anne lamp.

The house of anne theme is inspired on my old boarding school that I attended when I was a little girl.

The day before the building got demolished all our girls (age range from 30 to 80) were invited for one last visit.

This is always very fulfilling since I work for months designing and than all the effort and work comes together.

I wanted to see Ludwigs Gallery of Beauties.

Joseph Stieler was commissioned by the king to paint this famous series of beautiful women, women from all classes of society,( 1827-1850).

These sculptures by Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez are from her new series Frauleins.
Vases with a variety of historical styles and decorative patterns on top of each other.

The black colour gives them a universal view. These neutral monolytes reveal a stripe of untreated porcelain a -Newmanzip- wich seems to divide the object with a sedimentary timeline.

Welcome to my blog.

The sky over Amsterdam is one of my daily inspirations, the studio looks out over the IJlake.
Therefore I love this beautiful observation by my Americain friend, Julie Lemon from Chicago.

A close study of the 17th century Dutch landscape painters reveals

their ability to see and faithfully describe the land in which they

found themselves.

My recent trip to Amsterdam affirmed the Dutch painter’s accuracy

in describing the unique skies that are so much a part of this country’s landscape.

While visiting Nicolette Brunklaus, I was drawn to the ever-changing Dutch sky, which van Ruysdael transcribed centuries before with its vastness and varying moods.

At times the skies bring elegant puffy clouds, brisk wispy clouds,

dark low hanging clouds that press down to blanket the land,

or simply empty blue space. So moved by the changing moods of this

sky, I photographed them everyday at the same point as I walked to

Brunklaus’s atelier. (May 2009).

Welcome to my first post on my new blog! I am looking forward to sharing with you, through photographs, the things of my daily life that make me tick.

This is a needle point craft book by the great great aunt of my mother. Henriette Smit started needle point at the age of 10 and completed this book at the age of 16 (from 1890-1896). In those days, young girls had to learn all the needle point techniques in preparation for marriage.

Henriette died at the age of 25 of tuberculosis, just before her marriage to a doctor.

I love the different types and techniques of the textiles, therefore this book with its fine handcraft is a historical treasure and very inspiring. Every page shows a different skill from colored embroidery to miniature dresses and there is a personal quality to it to which I can relate.
